Leadership Consolidation at Sterling

Sterling Real Estate Trust is moving decisively. On May 23, the board appointed Megan E. Schreiner as Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, expanding her leadership role just 17 months after she stepped in as president.

Schreiner’s appointment signals a clear strategy: consolidate executive oversight and streamline decision-making. She’ll continue leading overall operations while taking charge of the trust’s financial planning and treasury responsibilities.

Her background puts her in a strong position to take on both roles. Schreiner joined Sterling Management, LLC in 2013 as a financial accountant. Before that, she worked as an auditor at a local CPA firm—experience that grounds her in financial controls and reporting. She’s a CPA, licensed in North Dakota, and holds dual degrees in Accounting and Finance from Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Connecting Strategy with Financial Execution

This move isn’t about reinventing the structure—it’s about building on momentum. Since taking the president role at the start of 2024, Schreiner has had a front-row seat to Sterling’s operational and financial rhythm. Adding the CFO and Treasurer titles brings financial oversight into direct alignment with leadership, reducing friction and supporting faster execution.

For Sterling, this is a strategic shift that could unlock more agility. Having one leader oversee both the big picture and the financials allows for more connected decision-making—especially important as the multifamily real estate market reacts to changes in interest rates, tenant behavior, and capital flows.

The trust didn’t announce any other leadership changes. But with this appointment, the message is clear: Sterling is focused on integration, continuity, and tightening its execution across departments. Schreiner’s expanded role starts immediately, with the goal of driving stronger coordination between operational strategy and financial oversight.
